The Parent Engagement Program (PEP) and Family Academy will build the skills and knowledge of parents and family members so they can become authentically engaged partners in education. PPS-HI will work with families at three middle schools: two on Oahu, including Kalakaua Middle School, and one on Kea’au Middle School on Hawai`i Island. Family members at each of the schools will learn more about the school system and how to effectively support their children’s learning. This program is supported by funding from GEAR-UP Hawai’i and PPS National.
Our national Parents for Public Schools trainers will be here in July to provide a train-the-trainer program using the PEP curriculum. Then local Facilitators and Parent Coaches will provide PEP workshops and serve as mentors during the school year to the families who participate. Through the Family Academy parents will use the leadership plans they developed to reduce barriers to learning, meet as a learning community to address school improvement and have the opportunity of receiving mini-grants to develop school based projects supporting students.
